Art Show

Introduction

Help your child make an art show by creating his own masterpieces to fill and transform a room in your home into an art museum.

Materials:
  • Paint
  • Paint Brush
  • Paper (you can use different sizes of paper for the paintings and drawings)
  • Crayons
  • Pencils
  • Markers
  • Play dough (recipe to follow)
    • 1 cup flour
    • 1 cup boiling water (to be measured and mixed in by an adult only)
    • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
    • cup of salt
    • 1 tablespoon oil (vegetable or canola)
Directions:
  • Have your child start by drawing a picture with crayons of the alphabet. He can use different color crayons and practice with upper and lower case letters. As he draws the letters have him tell you what sound each one makes. When he is done with each work of art, have him write his full name on the bottom of the page just like an artist does.
  • For his paintings ask him what he would like to paint. Does he have a favorite animal or toy he wants to paint? Have him paint as many pictures as he wants to. After he is done with each painting have him label what he drew by writing the word on the page.
  • Help your child make his own play dough. Have your child help you with all of the dry ingredients. Mix all of the dry ingredients together and then add the oil. Only an adult should boil the water and add it to the mixture. Have an adult mix the play dough carefully as it will be hot. When the mixture has cooled you can have your child take the play dough and form whatever he wants to make for his art show. He could make a snowman, a bicycle or different shapes like circles, squares and triangles. After he has made his sculptures have him write what they are on pieces of paper. He can then sit the sculptures on the paper.
  • When he is done with all of his art work, help him to hang the dry paintings and pictures around the room. Then set up his sculptures. Invite the rest of your family to come view what he has created.
Take it further:
  • A Rhyming Masterpiece - Have your child create a drawing by writing rhyming words. Try these to start out with and then see what other words your child can come up with. After he has written the words, have him draw some of the things he rhyming about. -Ine words: dine; fine; line; nine; vine.

Talk about it:
  • What was your childs favorite piece of art that he created? Did he like painting and making sculptures? What was his favorite way to make his art work?
  • Ask your child what his favorite color is and why? Did he use it in an of his art work?
