Super Song.... Super Band

Introduction

Have your child start a band by writing songs and playing instruments that she made herself with everyday items found in your home.

Materials:
  • Paper
  • Pencils
  • Metal pots
  • Wooden spoon
  • Drinking glasses
  • Pan or Pot metal lids
  • Paper towel roll
  • Food storage containers
  • Rice
  • Tape
Directions:
  • Help your child write her own song to sing in her band. Does she want to writet a song that rhymes? Will it be a silly song? Maybe it will be a song about school. Does she want to write more than one song?
  • If she has trouble spelling out a word, help her to sound it out so she can figure out which letter is next.
  • When she is finished writing have her practice singing her song.
  • Next, she can make her instruments for her band
Maracas
  • To make her own maracas have your child fill food storage containers with rice. Fill the containers about of the way full with rice.
  • Tape the lid to the container.
  • Your child can now shake the containers like maracas.
Drums
  • Turn a few pots over and have your child use wooden spoons as drum sticks.
Horn
  • Have your child take a piece of paper and make a funnel out of it. Then have her tape it together so the funnel does not come undone. Have her place it on the end of the paper towel tube and tape it in place.
  • You may need to help your child with this part, use the pencil to poke a few holes down the top of the horn.
After the instruments are complete, have your child pick which one she wants to play and which one she would like you to play. Play along to her songs and invite other members of your family to join in.

Take it further:
  • Rhyming Song and Dance Routine - Have your child come up with a rhyming song. As she does, have her make up a dance that she can do along with the song.
  • Super Why Guitar - Refer to the Super Why Guitar activity from episode 104 to help your child make a guitar for her band.
  • Use the letters on the bones to create words especially words from this episode (nice, prairie, adopt).
Talk about it:
  • What instrument would your child like to learn how to play? The piano, violin or perhaps the drums. Talk about the different types of instruments that make up the woodwinds, brass, percussion and strings.
  • Do you play an instrument or did you when you were a child? Talk about it with your child.
