ABC Scrub With Me!

Introduction

Germs are everywhere! Practice alphabet skills while teaching your child how to fight off germs.

Materials:
  • Bathtub, water table
  • Soap
  • Scrub brush/wash cloth
  • Glitter/flour
  • Foam letters
  • Towel
Directions:
  • Cover foam letters with glitter or flour to make them dirty. Tell your child that the letters are covered in germs.
  • Have your child use soap and water to make bubbles in the tub or in a water table.
  • Drop all the dirty letters in the water and have your child scrub them clean.
  • Call out a letter and have your child find it in the water.
  • Practice each letter as your child cleans it. Name the letter and its sound.
  • Sing the ABCs as you clean the letters.
  • Once the letter is clean, stick it on a towel.
  • Dry the letters, practicing them again as you dry them.
Take it further:
  • At bath time, use your finger to make letters in shaving cream or soap suds.
  • Create a fun poster with your child to display next to your bathroom sink reminding all family members to please SCRUB YOUR HANDS. Draw soap, bubbles, water, towel etc... Label these pictures and work on letters and words from the episode. Write the alphabet on the poster to remind children to sing it while they wash.
  • Go to your local library and take out books about germs. One great book for preschoolers is called Germs are Not for Sharing by Elizabeth Verdick.
Talk about it:
  • How did Red finally get the dirt off of her hands? How did you get the germs off of the letters? Go over the simple steps in hand washing. Get hands wet, scrub with soap while singing the ABCs, rinse hands under water, and then dry hands.
  • When should we wash our hands? After we go potty, before we eat, after playing outdoors, after we sneeze on them, etc.
  • Why should we wash our hands? What can germs do?
