Build-A-Sign

Introduction

Play a sign game inspired by the episode, The Three Little Pigs where the Super Readers had to find the wolf to find out why he was blowing down all of the houses. Alpha Pig had to build the letters in the word Wolf to make a sign that showed which way the wolf went. Have a sign hunt with your child to practice reading signs and letter recognition.

Materials:
  • Paper
  • Reusable sticking putty such as Fun-Tak
  • Markers
  • Three or more objects found around the house; a doll, fork, ball, apple.whatever you can find.
Directions:
  • Write the names of three or more items on separate pieces of paper, for instance BALL
  • With sticking putty, stick the signs up somewhere near that item, but not right on them.
  • Invite your child into the room and ask them to go searching for signs.
  • Easy: For non-readers, make two signs of each word. Stick one near the object and give your child the copy. Ask your child to find the matching word.
  • Medium: To help out younger readers, help them read the word that they found. Ask them what each letter sounds like.
  • Difficult: Ask them to bring back to you the object that's name is on the sign.
  • When they bring back all of the objects, they win!
Take it further:
  • For a harder game and to practice word writing, switch places with your child and let them write and hang the signs for you to find.
  • Discover signs on car trips!
  • How many STOP signs are there between your home and the grocery store?
  • How many signs can your child find with the first letter in your child's name?
  • Can your child find signs in every color of the rainbow?
  • Have your child make signs with each member of the family's names to hang on his/her door.
Talk about it:
  • In the car, have your child try to help you get to your destination by reading the signs along the road.
  • Talk to your child about the different ways we use signs; to show directions, the name of a building.
