Camp Activities: Jump into the Jungle!

"Jump into the Jungle" provides kids with a broad overview of life in a rainforest, including topics such as ecosystems and biodiversity. These activities were designed as a sequence that weaves together PLUM LANDING media resources including animations, videos, and games, with outdoor exploration and hands-on activities. Each day offers approximately three hours of programming, including time for free play, snacks, and bathroom breaks.

Day 1

Today you'll introduce your kids to PLUM LANDING and to the rainforest in Borneo. Start out by having kids watch What’s That Sound?!!, a short animated video about some of the sounds they might hear in the tropical rainforest. Next, head outdoors for the related activity Sound Safari. Complete one or more of the "Explore Some More" ideas listed with both the video and the activity.

If time permits, wrap up the day by watching A City in the Forest, a short video about what lives in, on, and around trees. Have a discussion using the associated "Conversation Starters" and complete one or both of the associated "Explore Some More" activities.

Day 2

Today is all about biodiversity - not just in the jungle, but right in your own neighborhood. Watch What’s That Smell??!! and Stinkarama!! Then have kids do the related hands - on activity Biodiversity Bingo. Continue exploring diversity outdoors with the "Conversation Starters" and "Explore Some More" ideas listed with both the videos and the activity.

Day 3

The term "ecosystem" doesn't apply just to wilderness areas. You are part of an ecosystem too! Watch A Forest in the City and see how the green spaces in cities are important parts of the urban ecosystem. Then, head out to explore the ecosystem you live in by completing the associated "Conversation Starters" and "Explore Some More" ideas.

When you return, play the rainforest ecosystem games Jungle Rangers and Jungle Jeopardy. During a break, discuss the associated "Conversation Starters." If time permits, complete one or more of the "Explore Some More" ideas listed with both games.

Day 4

Let kids take what they've learned about jungle life and set it to song! Sing along with the Earthlings on Jungle Jam!, discuss the associated "Conversation Starters," and complete the "Explore Some More" idea. Then, have kids perform their songs for one another - outdoors, if possible. If time permits, wrap up your day by heading outdoors and having kids complete several Plum's Photo Hunt missions.

Day 5

Wrap up your rainforest unit by exploring rainforests around the world and telling Plum all about YOUR world. Watch Gabi & Oliver's Favorite Place in Nature, then head outside to talk about the associated "Conversation Starters" and complete the "Explore Some More" activity.
