Club Activities: Hide and Seek

In "Hide and Seek," kids explore how animals use the physical structures in their habitats–from the roots of a mangrove tree in Belize to the trunk and canopy of the trees in your neighborhood. These activities were designed as a sequence that weaves together PLUM LANDING media resources, including animations, videos, and games, with outdoor exploration and hands-on activities. Each day offers approximately one hour of programming.

Day 1

Today you'll introduce your kids to PLUM LANDING and to a mangrove swamp in Belize. Start out by having kids watch Mangrove Mystery, a short video about an ecosystem that provides many places to hide from predators. Have a discussion using the related "Conversation Starters." Then, head outdoors for the hands-on activity Catch Me if you Can. If time permits, wrap up your day by completing the "Explore Some More" ideas listed with both the video and activity.

Day 2

Learn some strategies for avoiding predators in Underwater Hiding Places, a video showing how young fish and other marine creatures keep from being eaten. Lead a discussion using the associated "Conversation Starters," and complete the "Explore Some More" activity.

Day 3

Today is all about how animals use their habitats. Watch Clem Marvels at a Mangrove, have a discussion using the associated "Conversation Starters," and head outdoors for the "Explore Some More" activity. If time permits, while you are outdoors, complete several Plum's Photo Hunt missions as well.

Day 4

Experience how plants and animals interact in the mangrove swamp by playing the ecosystem game Make a Mangrove. Have a discussion using the "Conversation Starters," and do the related "Explore Some More" activity. If time permits, complete several Nature Sketchpad missions and the associated "Explore Some More" activity.

Day 5

Wrap up your water unit by exploring major water resources around the world and telling Plum all about water in YOUR world. Watch Earth to Blorb: Water!, have a discussion using the "Conversation Starters," and do the related "Explore Some More" activities. End the day with a sharing session where kids read aloud their letters to Plum.
