Afterschool Activities: Sizzle Time!
In “Sizzle Time!” kids explore how buildings and other structures cause cities and towns to warm up more than their surroundings, called the “heat island effect.” These activities include a PLUM LANDING animation and a related hands-on activity, both with extension ideas, to provide about one hour of programming.
Start by having kids watch Cook an Egg!, a short animated video that investigates just how hot city surfaces can get. Then, head outdoors to measure hot spots in your neighborhood and the impact of heat on animals with the hands-on activity City Heat Island. If time permits, wrap up your day by completing one or more of the “Explore Some More” activities.
