Educator-Led Family Activities: Hot Enough?

In “Hot Enough?” families explore how and why cities and towns are warmer than surrounding areas, called the “heat island effect.” These activities include a PLUM LANDING animation and a related hands-on activity, both with extension ideas, providing about one hour of programming.

Start by having families watch Cook an Egg!, a short video about why some city surfaces become sizzling hot. (Gather around a laptop or tablet, or arrange to view the video on a larger screen.) Then, head outdoors to explore heat and evaporation with the hands-on activity Hot Water. If time permits, wrap up your day by completing one or more of the “Explore Some More” activities.
