Ask:
- If some deserts are hot, and some are cold, and deserts can be found all over the world, then what makes a desert a desert? Deserts are places that receive very little rainfall.
- Are we in a desert? How do you know? The answer will depend on your location.
- What are some deserts you know?
- What are some ways that plants and animals adapt to desert life? They adapt with behavior, such as seeking shade or being active at night when the weather is cooler; with body parts that help reach water, such as long roots.

Deserts around the World
Make wall-sized maps of deserts around the world using poster paper, crayons, and markers. Use online resources or maps and atlases to draw a large outline of a region of the world. Then, color in the deserts in that region, labeling them with the deserts' names and the country or countries they are located in. Label other physical features (mountains, oceans, the equator) that are near the deserts. How far away is the nearest desert? Which desert is the farthest north? South? What surprises you about the locations of some deserts? How can there be deserts right next to the ocean? For even more desert fun, check out these singing sand dunes.

Create a message to Plum telling her all about your world. Write, draw, use photographs, or build props with craft supplies to show Plum what your neighborhood looks like, what kinds of plants and animals live there, what the climate is like throughout the year, and where the animals in your neighborhood make their homes. Be sure to tell Plum about one or two things that make your world awesome!
